Past Rants
Random thoughts and musings... PDF Print
Written by Jonathan Haase
Wednesday, 11 September 2002
Ok so here we are, September 11th, 2002. It's hard to believe that an entire year has passed since the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. In lieu of a rant this week, and in honor of the anniversary of the attacks, instead of a rant this week I thought I'd just post a bit of random thoughts in relation to that fateful day. Unlike most of the rants that I've done here I'm not planning this one out, nor do I know ahead of time where I'm going. My basic plan here is that I'm just going to get started with this, and go where ever my thoughts lead me on this. So with that said here goes nothing.

On the way to work this morning I listened to parts of the tribute that was going on in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. I couldn't help but be moved by it. I was especially impressed with the New York tribute. The simple restating of the Gettysburg address and reading of the names of those who perished in the attacks has got to be one ways to honor those who lost loved ones in the attacks that I can think of.

America Vs Iraq? PDF Print
Written by Jonathan Haase

It's been one of the top news stories on most news sources for the last couple of weeks. President Bush is trying to drum up support both here in the United States and abroad for his plan for a "regime change" in Iraq. For the last couple of weeks all the news have speculated on the US intentions to launch an attack against Iraq. Senators in congress have bristled over Pres. Bush's claim that he wouldn't need their permission to launch a strike. Meanwhile the internal debate rages on over what form a strike should take and if we should even attempt it. Various United States ambassadors, ranking all the way up to General Colin Powell have been sent to meet with various foreign leaders to try an garner support for a US led war to topple Saddam Hussein.

Washington Politics as Usual PDF Print
Written by Jonathan Haase

Before I get too far into this rant, I should first mention just a couple of things. First of all I need to apologize to those who read this space for failing to update a rant in well over a month now. Things have been busy, and quite frankly I've simply had to prioritize things and, somewhere along the line updating this website fell towards the bottom of the list of priorities.

The second thing I should mention, is that even though this is the second rant in a row in which I complain about things that the Democrats are currently stewing over, I am not a registered Republican. I do not always vote Republican. I tend to be more conservative in my political thinking which more often causes me to agree with what the Republican party is doing then with the Democrats, however I will not be one of those who blindly votes for the Republicans at every election. I will always vote for the candidate who I think can do the best job, and whose policies I agree with.

The latest Democratic Witchhunt PDF Print
Written by Jonathan Haase
Friday, 17 May 2002
Anyone who has caught any news on the TV, radio, or in the paper lately has heard of the latest attempt by the democrats to pin more responsibility for not preventing the terrorist attacks of 9/11 on the President. In the past few days many new details of intelligence that was known prior to September of last year has come to light. For instance President Bush was told in an intelligence briefing sometime in August that there were rumors of al Qaeda planning to "hijack American airliners, either in the United States, or overseas". Boy there's a specific threat if I ever heard one. Given that little tidbit President Bush should have known that the terrorists were going to try and take down the world trade center.

Oh but wait there's more, here is a timeline from cnn.com that points out a few of the facts, about who knew what, and when. From this timeline we can see the following information. In late July the FBI sent an internal memo originating in their Phoenix, AZ office "urging headquarters to investigate Middle Eastern men who were students in U.S. flight schools." The memo warned that bin Laden and his followers could be planning to use these men for some kind of terrorism involving a plane hijacking. Around this same timeframe the FAA issues it's own warning, quote "There's no specific target, no credible info of attack to U.S. civil aviation interests, but terror groups are known to be planning and training for hijackings, and we ask you therefore to use caution."

The Harry Potter Phenomenon PDF Print
Written by Jonathan Haase

Almost since the release of the first book in the Harry Potter story, the books have been the subject of much publicity and much criticism. Doing a search for the words "Harry Potter" on a search engine will turn up about 1.8 million different web pages referencing something to do with the series. In all of the stir created by the book series it seems there is absolutely no middle ground. People either love Harry Potter, or think the entire series is a plot of Satan. This latter view is held by many Christians as being the more likely case. They worry that it will affect our children and suddenly they'll all start practicing witchcraft. They view the books as dangerous.

I recently read the four books which have currently released, as it is my opinion that in matters like this one should have actually read a book before trying to form an opinion on it. After having read the books I have to say that I agree to some extent with both sides. The books were a very entertaining read. I completely enjoyed each and everyone of the books, and found myself unable to put them down while reading. In the words of some great book critics, a real page turner.
